Kids and I spent Earth Day 2012 at Oscar Scherer State Park in Sarasota, Florida as part of their 23rd Annual Earth Day Celebration. We arrived early to avoid the mid-day sun and hiked about 7 miles as we accomplished the Red, Green, and Blue Hiking Trails. We enjoyed a number of the kids activities and partaked in the free music, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and ice cream. Although there was the threat of rain, it turned out to be a beautiful sunny day in Sarasota, Florida with a nice breeze that kept us cool during the morning hikes.
Echo Moth Caterpillars
We're adventurous by nature and choice and couldn't help but notice the plethora of Echo Moth Caterpillars during the morning hikes. They were everywhere and they move quickly for caterpillars. We also couldn't help but notice all the Cardinals on the trails and the Cardinal happens to be one of my favorite birds!

Zebra Longwing Butterly
I am sure most people who live in Sarasota Florida realize this, but the Zebra Longwing is the Florida state butterfly and we had a sighting during our trail hike. It was flying at the time so we weren't able to get a photo like with the Echo Moth Caterpillar, but it looked like you would expect.
