It always seems that people are interested in healthy green tea more at the end of the year. I have to admit I tend to look at my health and weight at this time of the year as well, so you are not alone ;)
One of the things I see more and more is that people are attracted to the tea blends, which are a mixture of green tea and some types of spices. The green tea blends are typically a hit with people who want to drink healthy green tea but do not like the taste. [Aside: Although you could mix sugar and honey with your green tea, you have to be careful of cavities, so I highly recommend a good brushing regimen to maintain healthy teeth and gums].
You have to be careful of these additional spices because they may just be disguising lower quality green tea that is not as healthy as higher quality tea. I won't say this always happens, but the truth is that disguising off flavors or inferior products is a known practice. A good example is wine, where they blend two different wines to make a more palatable wine in many cases.
My recommendation is to purchase better quality green tea and purchase the fruit or spices separately. I do this all the time. I purchase known higher quality green tea and then purchase the fruit ( love raspberry green iced tea ) or spices ( cinnamon is a particular favorite this time of year ) separately. I purchase these fruits and spices at my favorite whole foods store fresh and get the best of both worlds - high quality green tea and fresh fruits and spices.
My purpose is not too scare you, but just to inform you that if you are indeed drinking green tea for its health benefits but don't like the taste, choosing a green tea blend may be giving you inferior quality green tea. Buy the healthy and better quality green tea and mix it with your own fruits and spices to make sure you get the best of both worlds.
